FinOps KPIs
The key performance indicators that make FinOps visible, actionable and CFO-ready.

FinOps succeeds when finance, engineering and procurement speak the same language. The right KPIs turn cloud cost conversations from blame into action and help the CFO understand whether cloud spend is driving value.
Cost Allocation and Accountability
The first set of KPIs measures whether cloud spend is visible and assigned. Target 100% of cloud costs tagged and allocated to business owners. Untagged spend is unmanaged spend.
Efficiency KPIs
- Resource utilisation: percentage of provisioned compute and storage actually used.
- Savings plan coverage: portion of predictable workloads covered by commitments.
- Spot or reserved instance utilisation: share of workloads running on discounted capacity.
- Waste percentage: idle, orphaned or oversized resources as a share of total spend.
Business Value KPIs
The most powerful FinOps KPIs connect cost to outcomes. Examples include cost per transaction, cost per customer, cost per API call and cloud spend as a percentage of revenue. These metrics help executives decide when to invest more and when to demand efficiency.
Forecast Accuracy
Measure how closely monthly cloud spend matches forecast. Improving forecast accuracy reduces budget variance, supports capacity planning and builds CFO confidence in cloud economics.
